On Thursday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a solicitation for 800 megawatts (MW) or more of offshore wind project bids – that’s enough to power over a quarter million homes. This milestone follows years of advocacy by NWF, our NY affiliate Environmental Advocates of New York, and a tireless coalition of partners that pushed Governor Cuomo to set an assertive offshore wind goal of 2,400 MW by 2030 back in early 2017, and has since been at the table working through the many important details that ultimately led to this request for proposals.

“This action is a watershed moment in New York’s renewable energy development efforts as we work to establish a secure, reliable and cost-effective clean energy future. New York will continue to combat climate change, investing in robust offshore wind development and clean energy that provides a path toward a greener and more sustainable future in our state and around the world.”  — Governor Andrew Cuomo

NWF is committed to working with New York State officials and developers to ensure that the highest standards of wildlife and habitat protection are in place throughout every phase of offshore wind development. Today, we celebrate an important step toward making the Empire State’s largest untapped clean energy solution a pillar of a responsible energy future!

“Today’s announcement marks historic progress in New York’s pursuit of responsibly developed offshore wind power, and we applaud Governor Cuomo and NYSERDA for their leadership in committing to a process that can maximize both the environmental and economic benefits of this critically needed climate change solution. We look forward to working with the Cuomo administration to advance this national model and ensure that all projects built to power New York are developed responsibly with the highest standards of wildlife protection in place every step of the way.”  — Catherine Bowes, National Wildlife Federation Offshore Wind Energy Program Director
