In a letter delivered on Friday, August 10, a diverse array of state, regional, and national groups called on the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to advance offshore wind power and to protect wildlife and habitat every step of the way, while maximizing opportunities for local jobs and economic development.

NYSERDA has been tasked with procuring 800 megawatts of offshore wind power (enough to power over a quarter million homes!) and is expected to issue a request for proposals for a first project by the end of 2018. They are now processing extensive public input on the mechanics of exactly how to move forward. National Wildlife Federation and many of our partners continue to work closely with NYSERDA on the important details of New York’s offshore wind industry, poised to take off in the coming months.
