Offshore Wind Energy ALBANY, N.Y. — At a time when Americans are deeply concerned about the state of our economy and our climate, the New York Public Service Commission has taken steps to bolster our clean energy future while providing jobs for Americans. The Public Service Commission voted today to approve an order directing the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to solicit bids for up to 2,500 MW of new offshore wind power projects before the end of 2020.
“Now more than ever, we need bold ambition to jumpstart America’s COVID-19 recovery with clean energy that can directly advance a more resilient and healthy future,” said Curtis Fisher, Northeast Regional Executive Director for National Wildlife Federation. “Governor Cuomo continues to lead the nation in pursuit of responsibly developed offshore wind power. This leadership, including the Public Service Commission’s action today, will help bring high-paying jobs, economic growth, and cleaner air to New York and the region while protecting our communities and wildlife from climate change.”
The National Wildlife Federation joined a diverse coalition of environmental, labor, business, and community groups in applauding the action by the Public Service Commission.
The commission’s action builds on New York’s precedent-setting, national offshore wind leadership. New York has the largest state market policy at 9,000 MW, and has signed contracts for three projects totaling over 1,800 MW to date.
